Hi all,
As we wind down the semester, let's reflect on how much about the business of video production you've learned this semester.
I think that some of you understand the importance of lighting a little more than you did before. Most of the time when I help you light your interviews, you are somewhat impressed and surprised how much it improves your video. Lighting is key! Learning how to use it for special effects will be your next trick.
The importance of writing your script BEFORE you edit can't be understated. It helps to put your thoughts in perspective, it helps draw a picture in your mind of how your story will develop and it gives you an opportunity to get creative with your words.
The credibility that an outside source adds to your story is important. You haven't done very well with this aspect of this class and we need to work more on that skill.
Related to that, I think that we need to develop your skills for pre-interviewing. Figuring out who is the right person to add credibility to your packages is vital. Many times you guys give up before you even figure out who your expert is and that contributes to you losing steam.
I think that your writing has improved. Although there is plenty more to work on, I think you understand the nuances of writing to the pictures, creating a story that moves people along and creating interest through words and pictures.
You have been able to choose your own stories. That doesn't happen in a TV station. Stories are assigned. Very rarely, unless you can propose an amazing story, does a reporter, photographer or anchor get to choose their stories. This is where we differ. Next semester will probably be different. We'll see.
For now, talk about what you've gotten out of this semester of Eagle TV and what you would've liked to have done differently. What would you like ME to have done differently? How can we improve upon the daily class? I want to hear your opinion.
I want you to also know how much all of you mean to me. Advanced class gets me up every morning. You guys are my family, my kids and I love each and every one of you. Have a nice holiday break! :-)
I've learned that it takes more then once person to make a great package. I tried to do a package alone and it was very hard and after my package got deleted i just gave up on trying again. I know that if i did start over again it would of been great though. (: I think we let are emotions get the best of us during this class and end up wasting are time talking about pointless stuff that has nothing to do with broadcasting and by the time we know its the deadline and we just throw something together and turn it in, which doesn't refelt anything you've taught us, but i'm sure you already knew this Watson! I don't think you should do anything different, your great and you've helped us a lot. your always there when we have questions we just need to start pushing are selfs. one thing we can change is making sure that everyone in a group has at lease one package they edit. i'm only going to speak for myself on this one but i can honestly i didn't really edit this semester, though i did learn how to edit better though! welp thats about it! i love you watson!

This semester has been ok.If we pushed ourself harder we could of had great packages.Mrs.Watson your GREAT!You always help us when we need it.You don't just give it to us though you may us think.I've learned its a lot harder to make a package than I thought.I have learn to edit a little, but I could always work on that.Having people who know what their doing is awesome too.I know if I need help I can ask someone in a higher level than me.Espelly Leornard,he's been a BIG help.Everyone is nice.We get along, its like a big family; We laugh together,we argue at times but when it all comes down to it were there for each other. This class has been my favorite class this semester.

What I have learned out of this semester is that there is a lot more work that goes on behind the scenes of a news program. The emotion , tension, and excitement all compound into one to put forth a better show. I am getting a little lazy on my work ethic, so I MUST do better than this semester. To me the way you teach is cool Mrs. Watson, I will just have to accept that at certain things I will have to work on.

I got the feel of a real job in broadcasting this semester. If someone doesn't like something, and the other does you must work around the edges and make a compromise. There were good days in broadcasting, and there were bad days. I wish i would've worked a little harder. I think you did everything well. It seemed like you had more a challenge though because the majority of people in our class are beginners. This semester was a trip. I'm thankful for the experience though.

This semester in broadcasting i've learned that you are your own keeper and you have to be focused on what you need to get done. You were 100% right when you were talking about motivation is key. When i'm motivated i work extremely better and get the job done. I've also learned you can't let things get to you no matter what it is; if it's struggling with a package, drama, or even just plain laziness, the world doesn't stop for you and you have to solve the problem and keep on working. yes this year had it's ups and downs but hey that's life. i don't think you should've done anything differently, one thing i did think of when i was reading the blog was that maybe it would be a good idea for you to assign the projects than us choosing our own, i'm not really sure but i have a feeling i would like this better. but finally i just want to let you know... you did a great job mrs. watson, like always :)

This semester I have learned that it takes a lot to make a good package. There are a lot of factors that can ruin one. What I would've wanted to do differently was getting my outside projects ealier. Everything you did this year was great. We can improve our class by everyone just working harder everyday.

I learned that brainstorming is one of the important things in my group to finish a package. You also said many things, like motivation is key and nat sound, which were correct, especially motivation. If we weren't motivated, we will get bored over what we tried to do, and start to fall behind. Besides being bored, their wasn't any influence to continue a package. I think assigning packages might be worse, but it could help on the other hand, that it can actually get us an idea on what to do. I don't think you had to change a lot of things, or do anything differently, I thought we were fine, unless if nothing were finished on packages. All and all, I felt like I got a good taste of what the advanced classes feels like, so it was an experience to realize what I need to do.
ReplyDeleteThis semester in broadcasting I learned that a news story can't just be told through one persons point of view and that each story has to tell you something new. As a teenager we do tend to give up when we feel like we cant win. Since it takes a relationship and a team to make the best story, I would have spent more time working efficiently with my team. I would have spent more time giving my team ideas. I think you could have been a little bit more strick when it came to the students that did nothing in groups and didn't help produce packages. As a class we could have participated more and gave each other story ideas and pointers on how to make each groups package better.
ReplyDeleteThis semester I learned more about editing. I learned short cut keys and effects. I even learned how to create music to use on packages. I think as a class we could have paid more attention to the lessons and you should have worked a little more with us on our packages.
ReplyDeleteIn my level one class we didn't get to talk about lighting because time was against us, so this sememster I learned more about lighting and how lighting makes a big difference on a package. I also relized that it takes more than one person to produce a package. This semester as a class we could have all been more interested in our work. We could have signed up for more outside projects and thought outside the box when it came to thinking of story ideas. I think you could have checked up on our packages to see if we were on the right track and if our packages were newsworthy. Other than that you have done a fantastic job and we all appreciate your dedication and patients. :D
ReplyDeleteThis semester i learned that even when it seems like youve got the stress of the world on your shoulders you always have to push through and get the job done no matter what
ReplyDeleteWell, I think that Eagle TV is great as it is. I learned a lot, and I had a lot of fun this semester. It was definitely hard work but it was worth it. I think you did everything perfectly, I wouldn't said you should change much. I honestly can't tell you what we should do differently because I can't think of anything =). The show was great and everyone in the class is very talented; we don't need much else.
