Expecting the Unexpected (or how to keep from pulling your hair out)

We've had some surprises this semester. How do you keep from going crazy when the unexpected happens? Well, you plan for it....the worst-case scenario. You plan for setbacks. That way, when they happen, it's not such a big deal because you have a back up plan.

Let me digress. I certainly didn't plan to have a flood in my room on Monday. And, certainly didn't expect it to happen again on Thursday. But instead of throwing up my hands, my (lesson) plans adapted well to the situation. We worked exclusively in the edit rooms or went out to shoot more footage (that you evidently needed anyway). Beginning class went out to do more interviews and I turned the dehumidifiers and fans on "stun".

So, extended deadline in place, talk about what set you back during this assignment and how you plan to keep that from happening NEXT time. What will you do in order to cushion yourself and your group from getting trapped by the ticking deadline clock? How will you work next week on your next assignment? What, to you, is the value of getting a project finished early instead of past deadline? How do you make that work? Please give me at least a paragraph of reflection here for your blog; but don't waste time staring at a blank page...you've got work to do!

  1. I think now that all of the 2nd class students know how important it is to begin work immediately and realize the importance of good working habits, next time will be a much more serious working time for them. The experience is what really got me out of my seat and working, with the understanding that nothing is handed to me and I must work hard to be successful.

  2. With my group we had a few set backs. We recorded some stuff and we couldnt find it on the tape. Also some of our interviews were not the best but we have to deal with what we have.Next time we will get more than enough footage .

  3. We have to make sure that EVERYONE in the group is working and have equal responsibities. We have to work fast, yet efficiently.
Now that the deadline was extended, we will work our hardest to make sure the job gets done correctly. We will work to improve what we've already done and make sure it's finished the second time around.

  4. Well i feel like my group didnt have an agreement on what our packet should be based on only two people out the group had an agreement an the rest of us was lost.If we can make a group decission then i think our packet would be good next time if my group could have a group decission then our packet would be great.

  5. I think better organizational skills would be the perfect remedy to stop this from haappening again. We had a rather scatter-brain type of organization something we will work to improve on in the week to come

  6. I think the setbacks have shown us how imperative it is to get busy and stay busy as soon as possible when you get work done in a timely fashion your able to better plan and be prepared for issues and setbacks and thats a lesson every class usually learns the hard way

  7. We need to be over prepared rather than underprepared for packages and future stories. If student don't understang how to do a package or have questions about the package, we must be the bigger person and ask a peer or ask Mrs.Watson for help. I have learned from Mrs.Watson just because the work is done does not mean its actually finished its about the quality not the quantity.

  8. What set our group back was that some of our video wouldn't record. So next time we should record and cheack if its working right there on the spot. IF we do that the deadline would not be extended.

  9. i think we can be prepared even when something goes wrong if we always plan ahead. i think it is good to have back up plans and to write up all your ideas just in case you get set back. always plan things before doing them.

In order for the first package to be completed and avoid passing the deadline, it is important for me to always stay on task, voice my opinions and ensure everyone in my group do their jobs. On my next assignment, I will give 110% to ensure that I receive an A and nothing less.

  12. welll when the unexpected happens it is always good too have a plan B therefore you wont notice the set back. for as the extended time because of the situation i feel that the prjects should be clompeted and not only average grade material but exceeding the average limit!

  13. I THINK OUR GROUP NEED TO LEARN HOW TO WORK TOGETHER BECAUSE HALF OF US DIDNT KNOW WHAT NEED TO BE DONE.AS WE ALL KNOW NOW GETTING OUR WORK DONE IS REALLY IMPORTANT. SO NEXT I WILL MAKE SURE WE WORK TOGETHER AND HAVE AN AGREEMENT ON WHAT WE NEED TO DO FOR OUR NEXT ASSIGNMENT.

  14. This semester I learned a lot as far as set backs and PROCASTINATION. Next semester/year I will not allow myself to fall into my old habits and I will push for greater things academic wise because I know that I am capable of achieving greatness.

  15. This semester i really learned from my mistakes far as set backs. Setbacks can effect your grade and your group's grade also. but plan b will fill in for them set backs. Always have a plan B.
