"Break a Leg!" It's the phrase people say to wish performers good luck. It's what we did on Friday with our first Eagle TV show, Friday Live!
After three weeks of practice on increasingly harder and more challenging shows and broadcast elements, the Eagle TV crew really pulled it out on Friday with one of the best shows I think I've seen in a long time! I'm so proud of my students.
It could've been different. It's live. The potential for a million things to go wrong are there. We experienced that, rehearsed that already. During rehearsal we had to start over many times when the video switcher froze up or the TelePrompTer wasn't keeping up or when the wrong camera was punched or when audio screwed up or when the cameras made jerky moves, etc. We rehearsed the mistakes and flubs and technical problems. We were prepared.
We also had a live audience with Mrs. Ausenbaugh's class. They came in right at the beginning of the announcements and scurried across the set floor to take their places at the corner of the studio. They couldv'e been loud, they weren't. There could've been problems... there wasn't.
Right before the show began, the last VCR in our system (the one that's downstream to all other equipment and the last component that our signal hits before going out to the school) kept turning off. It has to stay on in order for our signal to go out to the school. This was significant. We determined quickly that it was a tape stuck in the machine. As I sent Candice running to my office to get a pair of tweezers, Mr. Hosey's announcements began. Quickly with the tweezers, I got the tape out, turned on the VCR and still, it turned off. Mr. Hosey began to introduce us, I opened up the tape door and pulled out a tape label, turned the VCR on and then we rolled the open. Whew! Just in the nick of time! Everyone stayed relatively calm, which is the key to doing live television. We went on with the show and broadcast an incredibly professional product.
I'm incredibly proud of my Eagle TV staff. I have one of the most hard working group of students who care deeply about our show and what they have to offer. I have students who want to learn more and more and who are excited to learn more techniques. I have a group of students who are invested in what they are doing and are always wanting to improve on their last project.
Evidently, at the end of the show, I jumped up in excitement and re-injured my broken ankle a little. I don't think that the phrase is "re-break" a leg, but I see an irony here. The injury wasn't severe, just a little irritation, but I had to put my boot back on. I hope all shows are like this....I won't be jumping up and down for a while, but the excitement in the room was palpable after the show. Nice job, Eagle TV crew! You make me proud.
Comment on the show for your blog. What was your experience during the show or during the weeks rehearsal leading up to the show? What could we do better? What did we do well? What did you feel during the show? Did you feel like we were doing well? How can we keep this energy and professionalism going? We have a lot more shows to do!
I hope your leg gets better as well :) During the show i was at the same time nervous and super excited. Nervus because i was afraid i might say something wrong and mess up the whole show. Which im glad did not happen. Super excited because it was our first show and i was directing it! :) I don't think as a whole we need to do anything better because i believe Friday's show was awesome! Me on the other hand need to work on letting the control people know thigs before hand. We did everything really well in my opinion. During the show i felt very happy because all the work that we have done to make the show perfect finally paid off. If we keep this up all our shows are going to be super awesome! I think the best thing we could do is just work together like we did on Friday and if we have problems work together to fix them. We all love each other and we are like one big happy familly so i don't think working together is such a hard thing to do.

Going through the show live for the first time was an exciting experience. There really was the threat that hey this could mess up in a big way, but it was cool. The ones who were working that morning were a lot calmer than normal so that really does help. The only thing I could guess that would keep the professional look up would be to practice the day before a show.

Doing the show on friday was amazing. It felt great . The show went nice & smoothly . I was kind of skeptical at first because our equipment was messing up, but in the end we pulled it together.
ReplyDeleteWell, during the rehearsals, i started to get irritated because we practiced so much and it was the same thing each time. Nothing changed, nothing too big happened. And so i thought that since nothing was going wrong through the rehearsals, our show would roll perfectly. But...right before the show started the vcr was fixing to pop! But luckily, the show went great. I find it interesting that we tried to do a re-run afterwards to record, and that's when everything started to mess up. We'd be damned. Something I think that can be done better is the instructions. There's the director, the control room staff, floor director, production assistance, 3 camera folks, and the anchors. If i'm being told something by the director through the mics, I can't stand it when someone comes out of no where and takes my job. I have the headset that strictly says "Floor Director", I'm not taking anyone else's job, don't take mines. I think much went well, I suppose since it was the first show everyone was a little nervous, there was so much tension, many of us were freaking out. As the floor director, i felt like my job was so important[just as others job is as well], but if i qued the anchor in one second early, then the show would automatically have a flaw. I felt the adrenaline rush through me, it felt good. We can keep up the good work by arriving at 8. Point blank. 8:05 is already late. 8 AM, on the dot. It was great.
ReplyDeletei think the practices went well, after we found out which people were best for their selected job. It was kind of hectic but everyone got the hang of it. I think Priscilla does do a good job of directing, i would like to do it but I'm not loud enough and think i wouldn't be heard. I will try to do a better job of getting here earlier. This year i think will be successful.
ReplyDeleteEverything went good :)
ReplyDeleteEverything went GREAT! I was a little nervous on my way to school Friday and when I got in the class I was still nervous.Everyone showed up on time. That was really good. When the vcr stop, some people got worried, but we got it fixed. We were all set to go as soon as Mr.Hosey got done talking.Im proud of how far we have come.Everyone in the class gets along with each other so this year is going to be fun.Eagle T.V is going to be GREAT!

ReplyDeleteI loved the first show. I thought that it was very exciting for everyone, and though the tape got stuck, we got it out just in time, which made things that much more exciting. (I would've cried if we didn't get it out in time!) Lunna and GiGi were perfect, and even Sydney did awesome. It was just an overall awesome show. But I think that the reason why the second show wasn't as good is because everyone let their pride from the first show take over; we thought "this will be easy" and didn't humble ourselves. That's important. There's nothing wrong with being proud, because we had every right to feel proud of ourselves, we just can't let that get in the way of the next shows that follow; there's always room for improvement. But I love Eagle TV! And I don't think our fans think any less of us! We'll just rock it harder Friday! And Michelle, don't beat yourself up, you did much better than I would've ever done under pressure! you were just fine :)
ReplyDeleteThe show was great! I was a little irritated, if that's how you spell it, and at the end, it was fun and a little crazy. We could use some anchors who aren't so, how you say, nervous. Although, everything else was okay. I didn't feel much of anything during the show, except a little humor. We should try to be more prepared for the show next time, though.
ReplyDeletewell overall i think that friday was sooo exciting. i had alot of fun doing it. i was super excited. i think that we all put our fears aside and just went for it. i think the ppl in the back took good direction from the director(priscilla). i also think that the anchors were awsome. they did not show that they were nevous not one bit. i would live to have another day like friday.
ReplyDeleteWell everytime eagletv is on i get scared for everybody who helps keep the show going and think that they're going to mess up or somthing bt during rehearsal time i dont feel like that. I feel very relaxed and happy when we rehearsing but when its airing time i get really nervous and since da 1st show we did i have actually calm down a bit and now i am less nervous now.But i think we should be here on time or a little earlier i think we can be prepared n feel relaxed enough before we get on air...but so far i like the show though.
ReplyDeleteIronic how you say, "break a leg!" for good luck. Hope your leg gets better. Even if I was absent Friday, I hear it was a really good run live. I heard that everything went well, went as planned, and this blog says it all. It's obvious that more improvements are needed, but we will be fine.

I thought we did a great job. The energy was great. Everyone was on thier job and did not panic. We did have one problem but it did not stop us from going on. I loved it. And I think we did everything perfect. There is nothing that we could have done better. I just hope the next friday live is just as good as that one was. Acctually I hope the next friday live is alot better and no vcr problems!!
ReplyDeleteDuring the show i floor direct and make everyone laugh and loosin up. I thing we've been doing good as well. The only thing we really need to improve on is everyone getting there on time. I felt good when doing the show, by just the fact of being a part of it. We did real good with timing and team work. The way to keep the energy going is to just stay motivated and focused.
ReplyDeleteThe first show was great. Everybody could have been late and a major pain in the butt, but everybody worked together . The atmosphere in the room, while we was preparing and goin on the air was great. It's a great feeling knowing that what you put all your hard work into pays off . I cant wait till our next show .
ReplyDeleteI was so excited about our first show! All of these emotions come to me before being live, kind of corny, but it's like a roller coaster feeling lol. But I could feel everyone's energy & excitement which pumped me up even more! Our first Friday Live show was great! I want to just keep up the excitement and all the expectations for everyone to be on their jobs to be there all year (including me). I think one big problem we have is TIME MANAGEMENT... whether it's meeting deadlines, or arriving on time for shows - we need to stay on our toes and be on call at all times! Lets make it a great and memorable year :) It's go time!

Breaking that leg may have gave us luck but lets please prevent from doing that in the future haha. I feel that we all did a good job on the day we needed too, we needed to do a good show and we did an amazing show. I can't really say what we can do better except a lil moew run throughs and keep up the great work. I felt that we pulled through it really well and i hope that we can keep this optimism going... my family away from home... we did it finally im really proud of everyone.
ReplyDeleteI was tape operator for the show. At first I was nervous that I would mess up. But as the show went on, I started to be more comfortable in my role. I think we could work on everyone getting there for the show on time. Something might happen and we might not be prepared.
ReplyDeleteDuring the show I operate the camera. At first I was kinda nevious because I thought I was gone mess up the shot on the anchors. But after all I got use to the camera after re-runs. The shows are good but for the show to be better everybody need to come in early and be prepared.
ReplyDeleteDuring our first show, I am sad to say that I was just a by stander. I didn't do anything. :( haha But I was still nervous and excited for all the crew and our wonderful anchors, who did an amazing job, by the way. Its an exciting experience to work live, it gives you a good adrenaline rush. I think we kept our composure perfectly, and we were very professional.
ReplyDeleteLike Lunna said, I think one of our biggest problems is time management. We struggle to get here on time, and we struggle to get everything together then have time for atleast one run through, which isn't good.
With lots of Love,
Ashleigh Taylor <3 = )
P.S - I am extremely excited about Terrell and I doing our own show on wednesdays. I think with all of us working together it will be perfect. : )
Being an ANCHOR in the show has been such a great experience. iv worked the cameras and floor directring but the whole Anchoring is what excites me the most. Everyone did a wonderful job friday and this friday as well. I feel confident that the rest of our shows will be as a great or even better. And also iv heard peoples comments that the Show has gotten better this year! How our packages are interesting this year!! so i feel very excited about this years BVP class!! CONGRATS!!
