It's Showtime!

Okay folks....we're getting close. Close to our 2009-2010 broadcast debut of Eagle TV! I hope it is better than ever. My hope is that we are one the air Mondays and Fridays beginning in October (maybe Oct. 2nd?) and once a month on Wednesdays starting at the end of October.

We have a unique opportunity with the way homeroom is this year to feature Eagle TV in a longer-format show once a month on Wednesdays. This opens doors for us and I want us to take it seriously. That means showing up for class, on time and ready to go on the air....that means 8am, or as close as you can get to that time.

It also means we need to make our news packages better all the time. Try to outdo your last one. Get better and better. Keep learning and keep improving. As I know that you want to make your news packages better and better, we need to really concentrate on two things...the big picture and the little details. Let me explain.

The little details of each story you do require you to be aware of good audio (or bad audio) for EACH soundbite and piece of nat sound. Every shot must be perfectly framed and you must be aware of how light hits your subjects and how to adjust it if it isn't right. You must be able to pick out soundbites that advance your story and write a script that is compelling and will move people...to tears or laughter or both. You must make every edit be seamless or have your edits make a statement.

The big picture is what do we want our news show to be? What do we want to convey? What kind of "style" do we want? Casual? Formal? What elements do we want to feature? SAT word of the day? Or, the best places to eat around Austell? Quizzes, information, fun stuff or all of the above. Do we want to interview news makers on the air, or do we want to comment on our pieces after we come out of them? We have to have a consistent style and we have to be interesting and informative but not too flippant and silly.

As I always tell you to do, check out the following Steve Hartman (CBS News Reporter) stories for format and AMAZING writing. Many of them are You Tube videos so you'll have to check them out at home. I hope you check out all of them. It will take you about 20 minutes and I think your writing will benefit.

In the meantime, tell me what you want our show to be like. What do you want it to do? Inform? Entertain? Do we want standups? Do we want to feature our own students in a montage at the end of the show? Do we want to talk about news, features, sports or all of the above? Do we want to stand at the set or sit? Do we want a green screen and what will it be used for? Do we want to preproduce it or do it live? Talk about our new show and look at the examples of good work below. And....let's get going!

  1. I want our show to be the best. I want standing up, and if there's event(like homecoming or something) I want someone to be live standing somewhere. "Nothing is impossible" - There's no excuse, we can bust our rear-ends if we have to. We're quite limited with homeroom arrangements, so since we won't have eagle tv in easy reach, we gotta make our shows the best of the best. If we do use green screen, then it should be for a project of filming, but not for eagle tv. I think that's corny and pathetic honestly. I don't want to "reproduce", that's below standards.

  2. This year for Eagle TV, we should change it up. I think that we should have days when we stand, and days when we sit. I think we should produce certain shows that we want absolutely perfect, like our sports segment or a really important day when we show a package, and film live on the news day. I like the idea of stand ups, and I like a serious turn also. Like Angebel, I don't like the idea of a green screen it is somewhat corney, but I completely agree with her idea on having someone on the scene at important events such as homecoming, prom, the changing of the chairs, ect. The important events. We need to take Eagle TV to a new, more advanced level and we are willing to work harder to make it the best ever.

  3. For the first time around I believe we need to produce it so we know where we can improve on, not just for the anchors, but for the entire crew as well. Though I would like to to some stand-up at the end of each semester to try to have some of the school on a high note.

  5. I am so excited to start our show this year! I think we should change up Eagle TV and alternate our stand up/sit down days. I think live shows are exciting and we should do lots of those, but I would also like to see preproduced and advanced packages on air. We have a reputation to do both entertain and inform the school on what's going on in both the community and school. I would really love to have a sports show this year! If it is possible, I know we would have a very pleased audience. Let's make it a great year!

  6. I want our show to be better than ever! I want it to inform but at the same time entertain. I think we should do standups, depending on the package. For example, if you go somewhere like a new restaurant or a zoo then you should do a standup. I think we should talk about news, features, and sports because it makes the show more interesting and gives us more options. We should sit at the set because standing can be very tiring. A green screen would be nice to have and we would use it for things like when we want to have a pretty moving background. We have someone or something in front of the green screen and then when were ready to edit put a nice background. I think we should do both preproduce and live because there’s something’s that are better done before and something’s that are better done live. Im so excited for our new show and how good it will turn out!

  8. I do like the past "seasons" of eagle tv, but there is always room to improve. I would like to see a weather segment if possible. I think that would add a little twist. Live is the best way to go with anything because it's real and in the moment. I think this year will be the best one yet!

  9. For Eagle Tv this year, I think we should inform and entertain. Some of the most talked about and remembered show were entertaining. For example, Banana Phone. But the students should also be informed about important dates and events. I believe the show should be live like it has always been. This could help us become more professional. I also think we should talk about news, features, sports and sometimes weather.

  10. The show should be draw dropping. People should be anxious to see Eagle Tv every Monday & Friday. It should be entertaining at times, but mostly informative being that we have to deliver the news. We should switch it up from time to time, some shows standing, and some shows sitting down. I also believe we should add things like a weather report or a daily inspirational phrase to hep make Eagle Tv surpass any other school.

  11. I think the show should inform and entertain. We need to make it look professional but fun to where everyone wants to be on Eagle Tv. I think for certain packages, there should be live reporters. Eagle Tv need to be the best.

  12. I think that the show should be produced this year because it will prevent a lot mistakes and it will look a lot more professional. Sure, you think Live is technically "professional" but think about MTV News, which isn't always live, and their news is just as effective. Sometimes, especially with us being young, we can get our point across to our audience more effectively with it being produced because kids don't like sloppy; they like to see things well put together and see time actually put into it. Therefore in my opinion the show should be produced so that we can cover up spills and polish it to perfection.

  13. Iam excited about starting our show this year! Last year was a good year. We had our times where we got unorganized but I think we can improve a lot this year! I love the idea about standups , but we also should mix it up and not have the same format in every show. We need to make it interesting to where people want to watch them and eyecatching! We have an amazing group and I believe we will make this an awesome year!
